CONGO BASIN DISCOVERY

On this 12 -day tour you will explore the wilderness of Congo Basin. Leave the savannahs behind and explore the towering primary forests, rivers, baïs and grasslands of equatorial Africa.

Day by day program

Day 1: Arrive Maya Maya Airport

Airport assistance at Maya Maya Airport (Brazzaville) before boarding the scheduled flight – departs Brazzaville at 1 pm and arrives at 3pm at Mboko (Odzala-Kokoua National Park); 2-hour flight, Road transfer from the airstrip to Ngaga Camp (3-hour drive through the Odzala-Kokoua National Park). Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Ngaga Camp.

Day 2: Ngaga Camp

Gorilla tracking in the morning with a guide and tracker from our team. Lunch and relaxing afternoon, followed by a late afternoon forest walk for bird watching and discovery of forest life with sundowners at the Ngaga stream. Dinner at Ngaga Camp

Day 3: Ngaga Camp

Gorilla tracking in the morning with a guide and tracker from our team. Spend time with your tracker from the gorilla research team and learn more about your observations. Choose to enjoy an afternoon forest walk, or relax in camp. Head out on foot for a night walk to view nocturnal forest life. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Ngaga Camp.

Day 4: Lango Camp

Relaxing start to the day followed by a road transfer through Mbomo village and the Odzala-Kokoua National Park to Mboko Camp for lunch (please let us know before you arrive if you would like to meet the local communities) Onward to Lango Camp and Baï via a kayak journey on the Lekoli River. Have a relaxed afternoon in camp, or venture out on a discovery baï walk (wet), followed by sundowners. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Lango Camp.

Day 5: Lango Camp

Guided morning discovery walk through the baï (prepare to get a bit muddy and wet). Lunch followed by followed by walks in the forest (dry) or baï (wet), or relax on the deck and enjoy some bird watching. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Lango Camp.

Day 6: Mboko Camp

Guided morning walk through the baï (wet) and breakfast overlooking the baï. Scenic drive to the forest and a short walk along a wooden path to Mboko Camp. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon after lunch, or head out on a walk through the forest, and end the day with sundowners on a river cruise. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Mboko Camp.

Day 7: Sangha Lodge

Congo Conservation Company’s scheduled flight: departs Odzala NP at 9am, and arrives at Kabo at 9:40am (40 mins), landing at Kabo Airstrip. A short road transfer take you to the boats where a 4 to 6-hour boat journey up the Sangha River begins through the Sangha Tri-National Special Reserve (clear customs en-route). Arrive at Sangha Lodge and meet the Cassidys, your hosts and the family responsible for this experience overlooking the Sangha River, for a relaxed afternoon in camp. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Sangha Lodge.

Day: 8 Sangha Lodge

Early breakfast at the lodge before a road transfer (±1.5 hours) and forest walk (2 km) to Dzanga Baï. Spend the day on the research platform at Dzanga observing the diverse wildlife activity around this remote baï – the best Forest Elephant experience in Africa! After an exceptional day, follow the same route out with a forest walk and road transfer back to the lodge. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Sangha Lodge.

Day: 9 Sangha Lodge

Guided morning forest walk and net hunting with members of the Ba’Aka community, with time to work on the building of huts or learning about medicinal plants. After lunch, spend time with the pangolin researchers for the Sangha Pangolin Project. Sundowners and dinner are followed by a night walk to explore the wonderful nocturnal life. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Sangha Lodge.

Day: 10 Sangha Lodge

Jump on a boat for a transfer (15 mins) to the forest walk in the Valley of the Giants – spend the morning walking amongst some of the tallest trees in the Congo Basin (packed lunch). Do an afternoon hike to the waterfalls via a short boat transfer, or return to camp for lunch and enjoy a guided forest walk during the afternoon. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Sangha Lodge

Day: 11 Mboko Camp

Early morning breakfast and a 4 to 6-hour boat journey downstream the Sangha River, via Bayanga, to Kabo Airstrip in Republic of the Congo (clearing customs en-route). Board the Congo Conservation Company’s scheduled flight: departs Kabo at 1pm, arrives Odzala NP at 1:40pm (40 mins), landing at Mboko Airstrip. Afternoon guided forest walk followed by sundowners on the Lekoli River. Spend the night in a comfortable chalet at Mboko Camp

Day 12: Departure

Breakfast at Mboko Camp. Your scheduled flight: departs Odzala at 9am, arrives Brazzaville at 11am (2 hours), landing at Maya Maya Airport. Connect with your onward flight, or stay a while in Brazzaville and soak up the atmosphere.
